Solar panel systems are increasing in popularity, and it’s no surprise that they are. There are so many benefits to owning solar panels, two of the main ones being that they help to both save money and the planet. But what if you live in a neighborhood that has a Homeowners Association (HOA)? HOAs have rules in place for residents to follow in order to preserve the aesthetic of their neighborhood, so some HOAs might have restrictions when it comes to where and how you can install a solar panel system. Some HOAs might even prohibit you from installing solar panels! But luckily, many states have enacted laws to protect homeowners’ rights to benefit from solar energy.
Solar Access Laws

There are over 35 states that have some version of solar access rights. While these laws ensure that HOAs cannot prevent any of its members from installing solar panels on their properties, HOAs can still place some restrictions on solar energy systems, as long as they are reasonable. For example, some solar access laws allow HOAs to retain the right to influence the design of solar panels on the rooftops of houses. Generally, before deciding to install solar panels, you should seek permission from your HOA, and find out if you need to make sure any wiring is invisible, for example, or about any other rules they might have surrounding the aesthetics of your system.
How To Get Solar Approval From a HOA
We don’t blame you for wanting to reap the benefits of a solar panel system, and living in an area with a HOA shouldn’t stop you from doing so. To get approved by your HOA for solar installation, you should first request an application from your HOA; it helps if your contractor helps fill it out and submits it to the HOA. But you should also:
- Know your state’s laws – as mentioned, yours might have solar access laws, or solar easements (more on these later) that you must adhere to.
- Work with a reputable company that will:
- Present the HOA with information on how solar panels can increase property values.
- Work with the HOA to make sure that all the guidelines are met so you can install a system.
- Provide educational information to the HOA to help remove outdated strictures or ease overly prohibitive rules.
If you do decide to go solar, just be sure to adhere to your HOA’s rules so that the process goes as smoothly as possible – and more importantly, work with a reputable company that can help you streamline the process, as well.
Solar Easements

One way to ensure that you can get the most out of your solar panel system is by entering into a voluntary agreement with your neighbors, known as an easement. With an easement, you can ask your neighbors to keep their trees trimmed or remove other things that can obstruct your solar panels from getting sunlight, and performing efficiently.
